The Export Market Development Grant (EMDG) scheme is a key Australian Government financial assistance program that helps small and medium Australian companies develop their export markets.

The Highlights

The Export Market Development Grant (EMDG) provides exporters  up to $150,000 grant per year for 2020 and 2021 financial year.

In 2020 – there is NO EXPORT REVENUE TEST. Your grant will be determined based on your Eligible Marketing Expenditure.

This is a window that Exporters should take advantage of NOW!!

From 2022, the EMDG programme will undergo a major facelift – with significant – but different opportunities for exporters.

Whats The New EMDG Programme going to look like ?

Do I qualify for EMDG?

If your business exports

  • Australian-made or designed goods, Services
  • Inbound tourism
  • IP and know-how or Events held in Australia

Then you could be eligible for a grant of up to $150,000 per year with the EMDG program.

Even if your Goods are not made in Australia you could be eligible based on the amount of Australian input to your Finished product.

Applications open each year on 1st July and close on 30th November.

Eligible Promotion Expenses

8 categories of activities can be claimed in the EMDG Application
  • Overseas representatives(Limit $200k): the cost to have an overseas representative act on your behalf (an agreement and evidence of marketing activity required).
 

  • Marketing consultants (Limit $50k): the cost of engaging a consultant to undertake export market research (an agreement and payments made evidenced by activity required, e.g. a report).
 

  • Marketing visits: the cost of travel such as airfares plus $350 per day for accommodation.
 
 
  • Free samples (Limit $15k): the cost of providing free samples of the product you are promoting for export.
  • Trade fairs, seminars, in-store promotions
 

  • Promotional literature & advertising: the cost of promotional material, such as brochures, websites, Google AdWords, social media, etc.
 

  • Overseas buyers (Limit $45k): the cost of bringing potential buyers who are non-residents to Australia.
 
 
  • Registration and/or insurance of eligible intellectual property (Limit $50k): the payment made to patent and trademark attorneys for overseas applications.
 

Export Revenue

  • Year 1 and 2 – no revenue test
  • Year 3 – limited to 40% of revenue
  • Year 4 – limited to 20% of revenue
  • Year 5 – limited to 10% of revenue
  • Year 6 – limited to 7.5% of revenue
  • Year 7 and 8 – limited to 5% of revenue
EMDG

 

Removal of the export revenue test 2019-2020 grant year: Austrade has waived the export performance test for those applying for a grant for the 2019–20 grant year. 

From July 1 2020. any business which has incurred eligible EMDG expenses for promotional activities in 2019–20 will be able to seek reimbursement for 50% of these expenses without the Export Performance Test applying.

The Process

Our EMDG Expert will take you through the whole process for your EMDG Claim – from preparation of your claim, to lodgement, audit and review.

 

Call BSI and sign a success fee based service and confidentiality agreement.

BSI will:-

  • Identify all promotional expenses related to your export markets and all export revenue.
  • Ensure all agreement with various parties (representatives , consultants and suppliers ) are in place, and all eligible expenditure has been paid during the year.
  • Prepare and lodge the claim, the claim is based per calendar year (1 July – 30 June) and should be lodged properly to 30 November.
 
 

YOUR GRANT

  • Your 1st $100k grant will be paid within 2 weeks of the audit has been approved.
  • The balance of your claim will be paid by 30 June (depending on Government funds available ). *If there is no enough fund available, the 2nd tranche will be apportioned.
